Predictions: Robert is going to get attached to Pinky and eventually his father will slaughter him, leaving Robert devastated. Robert's father will get mad at Robert because he doesn't believe in all the Shaker laws. Robert's father is teaching him a very important lesson about life that Robert will later use.
Images:
Here is a picture of a corn cratch. A corn cratch, similar to the one that Robert's ox pulled.
This is a picture of Ethan Allen. Ethan Allen was a famous baseball player. Robert liked Ethan Allen a lot, but his teacher, Miss Malcolm, did not and preferred Abner Doubleday instead.
Clarify: Because Robert's father can't read or write he can not vote. This was very common back then. What Haven means when he says that they are rich and that the world is poor is that the Peck family understands and lives life more than the people all around the world.
Try: Why in Shaker religion is it forbidden to go watch baseball on Sunday's? Who are Ethan Allen and Abner Doubleday? Why are they relevant?
Use: My parents have taught me similar lessons to the one that Robert is being taught. We all have to be thankful for what we are given because life is like a deck of cards, and we must deal with the cards we are given.
Review: Chapter 4 is a good life lesson that everyone needs to learn. Robert and Haven get Soloman, the ox, to pull the corn cratch, Pinky's crate, far away from Daisy's. While Soloman is pulling the crate, Rob and his father get to talking about life and how you need to deal with what you are given. Haven teaches a lesson about how they are rich because they understand life and live it to it's fullest, where as everyone else in the world is poor for not living life.
