Night Section 5
Summary: After all of the terrible torture that the Jews had endured, many Jews including Elie had lost their faith in god. They could not comprehend why god was not saving them during such a time in need. Every few weeks or every other week, prisoners went through a selection that decided whether or not the Jews would stay or live or whether or not they would die. One day, there was a random selection and Elie was selected to stay alive and it looked like Elie's father was going to die. Thankfully though, there was another selection and his father was saved. Although, Elie and his father were separated into different blocks. Winter soon came and Buna, their camp, became unbearable. Elie's foot became infected to the point where it almost had to be amputated, but the doctor performed surgery and was able to save his foot. News that the Russians were coming arrived and so all of the prisoners needed to be evacuated from the camp. Hospital patients, however were supposed to stay, but Elie escaped and went with his father. All of the prisoners left the camp before the Russians arrived.
Predictions: Elie will never see his father again because he won't survive the selection. Elie's foot is going to be amputated.
Images: Here, is what the concentration camps looked like during the winter. The prisoners had to endure such horrible weather conditions that many did not survive during the winter.
Clarify: Elie and his father went through the selection process and they both were saved because Dr. Mengele made a mistake.
Try: Why wasn't Elie's father selected during the first round? What would the Russians do to the prisoners if they hadn't escaped in time?
Use: By living in Michigan, we endure horrible winter conditions. Although, not as bad as they did in Germany.
Review: Elie and his father are saved by the selection process. Elie's foot becomes infected and almost needs to be amputated but thankfully the doctor was able save his foot by performing surgery. The prisoners all had to leave Buna because the Russians were coming.
