Night Section 8
Summary: Once they get to Buchenwald, the prisoners are forced to take showers, but there were so many people that it was hard to get in. Meanwhile, Elie's father just wants to lie down in the snow, but Elie convinces his father not to lay down because he would die if he were to lay down. The next morning, Elie searches for his father for what seems like an eternity, but they meet up again through coffee. Elie takes his father to the surgeon because there is no doctor and he is diagnosed with dysentery. There is nothing the surgeon can do, so they are sent away. For many days Elie stays by his father's side, by an SS officer tells him that there is no point anymore because his father is just going to die anyways. The next morning, Elie's fathers body is gone because it was taken to the crematorium. Elie doesn't shed a tear even though he is now alone in the world with no one left.
Predictions: Elie's father is going to die. Elie will never see his father again because he lost him.
Images: This picture shows the bunks that the prisoners at the concentration camps had to share and sleep in.
Clarify: Elie's father dies because of all the torture that his body had endured. His body just couldn't take it anymore.
Try: How had Elie become so accustomed to death, that he didn't even shed a tear when his own father died? Why didn't the guards tell Elie that they were taking his father to the crematorium?
Use: I know what it feels like to be shocked when a loved one dies. When my grandpa died, I at first did not understand but as the days passed, the tears began to flow.
Review: Elie and his father arrive at Buchenwald. Elie's father is diagnosed with dysentery and told that there is nothing that the doctors can do for him. Elie stays by his fathers body until one morning when he finds that his fathers body is missing and that they had taken it to the crematorium.
