Night Section 6
Summary: The prisoners march to Buchenwald became a sprint and if you could not keep up you would either be trampled and killed by all the other prisoners or you would be shot by the guards. After many hours the guards decided that it was time for the prisoners to rest. Elie and his father take shelter in a shed with many other prisoners. Elie wants to sleep but his father says that sleeping in the cold snow would be a terrible idea because then he takes the chance of never waking up. A few hours later, the march begins again and they reach the camp of Glewitz. The prisoners stay there for three days without food or water. On the fourth day, the prisoners are forced to go through another selection. Elie is put to the right and his father is put to the left, the death line. Elie saves his father by causing a raucous. They then march once again and a train takes them from there.
Predictions: Elie's father won't survive much longer. Many people are going to die on their way to Buchenwald.
Images: Below, is a picture of prisoners marching through the terrible weather conditions from camp to camp without food nor water.
Clarify: Elie's father is saved because Elie caused a scene by going into the left line with his father. The guards did not allow this, so there was a mix up when the guards went and grabbed the prisoners who went to the left line. Although, many prisoners were killed on accident during all the confusion.
Try: Why didn't they give the prisoners any food or water during the march? Why did they make them sleep in the snow? Why did the prisoners not get to take a train until the second march?
Use: I know what it feels like to be very thirsty, because once I was hiking through the mountains with my family and no one had any water and so I almost passed out due to dehydration.
Review: Elie and his father successfully make it Glewitz and stay alive. They both make it through the selection process due to Elie's raucous. After the selection, they continued their trip to Buchenwald by train.
