Night Section 9
Summary: After the death of his father, Elie doesn't care about anything other than food. The next couple of months, the Allies were getting a lot closer, so the camps were evacuated. When Elie's camp was being evacuated, an Allie attack occurs. The battle only lasts for a short period of time, but when it is over with the American troops start crying and cursing because of the sight of all of the Jews. The Americans release them and as a free man, Elie goes home and eats and eats. He eats so much that he comes down with food poisoning. He is admitted to the hospital for his food poisoning. After years of not looking at himself in a mirror, Elie finally does at the hospital. He looks at himself and does not see a free man, but a corpse staring back at him. The image is still with him today.
Predictions: All the Jews will be killed before the Allies arrive to save them. Elie will continue on in memory of his father.
Images: Here, prisoners are being released and set free by American troops. As you can see, they are happy as can be that the journey is finally over.
Clarify: The Americans are crying because the Jews are such a sad sight to see. Looking at the Jews showed them what death was like.
Try: Where is home for Elie if all of his family is gone? Did the rest of Elie's family make it to the end? How many years did Elie have to endure such pain and torture? What was the comparison of prisoners who entered concentration camps to those who exited concentration camps?
Use: I know what happiness feels like to be set free and see loved ones again because my cousin just came home from the war a few years ago and I had missed him so much.
Review: The prisoners only have to endure a few more months of pain and torture, and then the Allies come and save them. The prisoners are finally set free.
